Although Hawkshead was owned by retail giant Arcadia with offices in London and their clothes made in the Far East,
the brand identity was that of the Lake District. I had many weeks in Hawkshead, interviewing locals and getting their stories for articles in the mail order catalogue and point of sale. Ted showed me how he made shepherd's crooks in a barn he also built.
Their innocence, trust and friendship has stayed with me.
